Getting The Most From Your Pest Service

Is there something I should do before you do the pest service? Yes, there is…

1. Pick Up The Items On The Floor

It is essential to pick up any loose items before arriving. This includes children’s toys, pet toys, clothes, empty food packets, water bowls and dog dishes. This ensures that we can adequately treat the main areas of your home and prevent the spread of pests to other places.

2. A Bit Of Cleaning

It is important to vacuum and clean all areas that will be treated before we arrive. Most household pests like to run along the skirting boards and only usually venture to the middle of the room when they are dying or going directly to a food or water source.

The most significant benefit of spraying on a clean surface is that there is no immediate need to clean up after the treatment, which needs time to work effectively. Some chemicals can take up to four weeks to eliminate specific pests. People often ask me, “How long until I can mop”? My answer is always the same “When you have to”. Sweeping and vacuuming are the two best ways to clean up after treatment. If you do mop, try and leave a 10cm gap along the internal walls (The crawl zone). If you mop the chemical away, you can completely wipe out your treatment, particularly if you use a steam mop.

3. Organise Your Pets

Pets should be kept out of the way during treatment. This includes putting them in a separate room or cage and ensuring they cannot access the treated area until it is dry. Cover fish, lizards, turtles, snakes, guinea pigs and birds. Oh, and please warn the Technician if you have any unusual pets that bite. Drying can take as long as three hours, especially in rainy weather.

4. There Is No Need To Move Heavy Furniture Or White Goods

It is unnecessary to move beds, lounges, bookcases or refrigerators. These areas can be treated with Aerosol sprays, Dust, or Gels.

5. In Summery

Remember to pick up all items off the floor and give every area along the internal skirting boards a good sweep and vacuum. Please keep your pets away until it dries as chemicals may cause skin irritation. Be sure to put on some footwear yourself so you don’t get the product on your feet, and if you do, please wash them with warm soapy water.

Lawn Grubs

Identififying Lawn Grubs

Lawn grubs are the larvae of various beetles, and they can cause severe damage to your lawn if left untreated. The most common sign of Lawn grubs is small, brown patches of dead grass that appear in late summer or early autumn. Lawn grubs feed on grassroots, killing the grass and making it more susceptible to disease. Several treatment options are available if you suspect that Lawn grubs are present on your lawn. One option is to apply a pesticide specifically designed to kill Lawn grubs. Another option is to till the affected area of your lawn to expose the Lawn grubs to predators such as birds and small mammals. Finally, you can manually remove Lawn grubs from your yard by picking them off with your fingers or a small tool. Whichever treatment option you choose, it’s essential to act quickly to prevent further damage to your lawn.
Control the population of lawn grubs

Feed Your Lawn To Make It Healthy And Resistant To Grubs

A healthy lawn is the best defence against pests. A thick, green lawn is resistant to damage from grubs, chinch bugs, and other common lawn pests. The key to preventing problems with pests is to keep your grass well-fed. A regular feeding schedule will ensure that your lawn has the nutrients to stay strong and healthy. In addition, feeding your lawn will help promote deep rooting, making it more resistant to drought conditions.

Remove Any Affected Turf And Replace It With New Sod or Seed

If you suspect that lawn grubs are damaging your lawn, it’s essential to take action immediately. One of the best ways to control lawn grubs is to remove damaged sods of grass, which can provide grubs with food and shelter.

Prevention Of Lawn Grub Attack

Many gardeners also recommend using organic lawn treatments, such as nematodes, to kill grubs before they have a chance to do severe damage. With a bit of effort, you can keep your lawn looking green and healthy. Water deeply and regularly fertilise according to package directions and mow at the recommended height. By following these simple tips, you can prevent lawn grub infestations.

Lawn grubs can be a significant problem for your lawn, but you can minimise their damage by identifying them and treating them quickly. Ensure to water and keep up the nutrients in your soil, don’t cut the grass too short, reseed or turf damaged areas, and get a professional involved. With just a little bit of work, you can protect your lawn from these pesky critters and keep it looking healthy all year long.

How to Keep your Home Free From Cockroaches

How to Keep your Home Free From Cockroaches

If you have cockroaches in your home, you’re not alone. These pests are one of the most common household insects in Australia. While they may be a nuisance, cockroaches can also pose a serious health threat to humans. That’s why it’s important to take steps to get rid of them and to prevent them from coming back.

One of the best ways to keep cockroaches out of your home is to have regular pest control treatments. A professional pest technician can treat your home for cockroaches and other pests, and help you to keep them from coming back.

In addition to professional pest control, there are a few things you can do to discourage cockroaches from taking up residence in your home. First, make sure that your food is stored in airtight containers and that there is no food left out on counters or tables. Cockroaches are attracted to food sources, so keeping them away from food is an important step in preventing an infestation.

Second, seal any cracks or crevices in your home where cockroaches could enter. Cockroaches can squeeze into tiny spaces, so it’s important to make sure that there are no openings that they could use to get into your home.

Finally, keep your home clean and free of clutter. Cockroaches like to hide in dark, warm places, so a cluttered home provides them with plenty of places to hide. By keeping your home clean and tidy, you’ll make it less inviting for cockroaches.

If you have cockroaches in your home, don’t panic. These pests can be controlled with professional pest control treatments and by taking some simple precautions around your home. With a little effort, you can rid your home of these unwanted guests and keep them from coming back.

How To Get Rid Of Ants

How To Get Rid Of Ants

Now, why would I want to get rid of this fascinating insect? Well, they are super annoying when they get into your food. Their numbers can be overwhelming at times, and a lot of ants do have a painful bite. So what can we do? In today’s blog, I will look at the different type of ants and why they are so hard to eradicate.

Before I dive deeper into the topic, lets, look at some fun facts from one of my favourite pests.

Interesting Facts About Ants

  • The Bullet Ant in the Amazon jungle has one of the most potent stings in the world. Some say it feels like being shot.
  • The ant is one of the world’s strongest creatures for its size, and some species can lift 50 times there own body weight.
  • Ants do not sleep much studies have shown that workers may take anywhere from eight minutes of rest every 12 hours, to over 250 one-minute naps in one day; often at irregular intervals.
  • The most dangerous ants in the Brisbane area is the Imported Red Fire Ant. The Yellow Crazy Ant is another invasive species that can hurt you if they are disturbed.
  • Ants can be found on every continent on the planet except ironically Antarctica.
  • Flying male ants have only one purpose of mating with the queen or queens.
  • Ants have no ears and sometimes no eyes and use their antenna, scent and vibration for navigation.

How To Get Rid Of Ants In Your House

To get rid of any pest, you have to ask yourself three questions. Question No. 1. What’s attracting the ants into my house? Classic example: Second week of the school holidays and ants everywhere. I found an uneaten sandwich in a child’s schoolbag—question No. 2. Where are the ants coming from? Trees against the house leaves in guttering? and item 3. What type of ants are they? This last step is essential, and it’s not uncommon for even pest controllers to get wrong when treating.

Sugar Feeding Ants

Sugar Feeding Ants are usually found on your kitchen bench or pantry searching for anything sweet. Commonly honey jam or sugar. These ants in the wild predominately feed on the nectar of flowers and fruits. For these ants, I use a targeted Ant Gel bait, which kills the queens and eliminates the colony. As a temporary solution, you can clean benches with a mint-scented detergent which confuses the signals for pheromone trails used to find food—store sweet products in glass containers and wipe the jars if sticky. Remember, ants are tiny; what might seem a little food to you is a feast to them. You’d be amazed at how much sugar is in almost every food.

Protein Feeding Ants

Protein Feeding Ants. These ants predominately feed on protein such as other insects, fats, peanut paste, and even harvested fungi. These also can be treated with gels, but if intensity levels are high, it is best to reduce their population before using gels. It would help if you used the Gel bait that’s appropriate to their diet. The best way to reduce large populations is to use a non-repellent chemical. It is possible to reduce the numbers of an ant colony with repellent type chemicals. However, they can retreat to their nest until conditions are favourable again (like after rain) and reemerge.

It seems utterly pointless to me to try to get rid of ants entirely if they are not causing any problems such as getting into pet food or biting or damaging the lawn. Protein ants usually bite, and if they’re a problem for your family, you should treat your whole yard. Are you getting bitten by ants while hanging the washing? Are your children getting bitten while waiting for their turn on a trampoline? There are specific baits (not sold in the shops) that eliminate the nest of these ants and chemicals that eliminate species such as funnel ants, which can destroy your healthy lawn.

Fats And Oil Feeding Ants

Fats And Oil Feeding Ants will eat almost anything. These ants prefer to eat grease, fats and meats, which can be a bit confusing because some of them also eat some protein. Even some sugar feeding ants eat protein too, so it’s not as easy as using ant old supermarket gel or some strong poison. But don’t worry at Logan Pest Control I have several methods and simple tests to identify any ants I cannot recall and a team of experts to call on too. So ants are treated the correct way with the proper chemical.

By the way, the Imported Fire ants we have in Brisbane are Fat, and Oil Ants require the use of both bait and a non-repellent chemical. However, there is a correct method so that queens do not escape. So don’t try to do this yourself. Call the Imported Red Fire Ant Eradication Team If you can’t wait for the program to eradicate them for you, you can call Logan Pest Control by clicking the Book Now tab as I am certified to treat Fire Ants.

Final Notes

At Logan Pest Control, I pride myself on my success in treating ants. All my full house treatments come with a three-month call back on ants coming into your house. I can also get rid of all biting ants, Fire Ants, Meat Ants, Funnel Ants, Singapore Ants, Metallic Green Ants and even the standard Black House Ants that cause chaos around the home.

One of the biggest reasons permethrin based self-treatments fail is because the amount of chemical is too low and not directed at nests, where the queen or queens maintains their colony. My prices start at $100 depending on the size of your yard and density of ants. Whilst some products from the supermarket shelf do work; you need to know a bit more about the products to apply them correctly.
